Who Names a Bot Rachel?

It's a legitimate question. I went through at least half a dozen names but none of them felt quite right. Then Rachel popped up in my Google Photos memories one day and I knew I'd found the name.

Meet the Real Rachel

The real Rachel was my fuzzy bestie. She kept me company through the long days of pandemic teaching and even longer hours of my doctoral program. She loved sitting on my lap, especially when I was typing. We finally agreed to disagree about whether that was helpful.

I called her my office kitty, and she even had her own water cooler next to my desk.

Rachel passed away in January 2025. And she wasn’t just mine — everyone in our family considered her their bestie too.

Naming CourseAlign’s assistant after Rachel just felt right. It’s a way to share that steady, always-there, sometimes hilarious, kind of support she gave us with other educators who might need it too.

The original Rachel, a Russian Blue cat wearing a pink collar, lying on a yellow blanket.

Rachel Williams, fuzzy bestie, office kitty, and Curriculum Companion inspiration.
